Relief

These river rocks must have been here many seasons

I, a weary traveler seek rest in them

Just to sit and catch my breath

Take a long, cool drink

It was probably a day from the time I first held

This refuge in my vision

As I fought the current

As I always do

Took so long to reach this place

From downstream

I will sit and look back now at how far I have come

Not very far, it seems

Yet so much still beyond where I started

Either direction, a mystery

Perhaps if I stop fighting

And go with the flow

Jump in and let the waters carry me

Perhaps then the tranquility I observe

But have yet to feel

Will be mine at last

What is this tired old spell the dreary days of winter have cast upon me?

I can last no more in this bleak existence.

Oh, Spring, please come!

I long for your long warm days and lightness.

I need to look upon your sun and shout “Hooray”!

Once in, the cold envelopes me for such long, long nights.

I cannot rest. I cannot dance. Misery is my only love.

Here….a tiny hint, I see.

through my sad and broken pane.

Your voice, so small.

Is that

Green?

Oh say it is so! Must be that spring is coming.

She will not let me down, ever.

She always comes. Just as I feel I can stand not one more second.

There she is….

She cannot be divided. Forever whole, though not permanent.

We have not always treated you well, Mother Ocean,

In the 100 plus years from this day.

We launch great ships – the likes of which you have not yet seen

Some you will sink.

You will spin great, furious storms and cause devastation for hundreds of miles.

Our great wars will stain your beaches red,

And our hunger for your precious oil will smother many of your treasured creatures.

You will express your fury even more with enormous and devastating waves.

Yet I can find a thankful heart, as much now as then.  Great waters of the sea, you sustain us still. More than a century later, you give us life.  The wind that fills your sails and powers every wave still blows strong and good.  Ocean life thrives and still has much to teach us.  Your enormous depths remain a mystery: a place of hope and wonder.

Your skies still meet the water with a beauty we do not deserve to behold.

It is a gift every dawn, a blessing every night.

You weave great tales of adventure and mayhem,

About underwater cities and nations afloat, never ceasing to inspire the next story, overlapping, like your waves, with richness only you can bestow.

And your rhythm still calms a troubled soul, lulls the child, and brings the promise of peace.
